Toledo

Toledo is Spain folded into stone — a hilltop maze of cathedrals, synagogues, mosque remains, sword-makers, scholars, and golden light. Once the capital of medieval Spain, it became a great crossroads of Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin learning, especially under Alfonso X, whose translators helped carry ancient knowledge into European scholarship. The UNESCO-listed old town still feels preserved enough that El Greco’s view from across the Tagus River makes perfect sense. Within minutes, you can move between the Cathedral, old synagogues, mosque traces, cloisters, courtyards, Toledo steel, damascene goldwork, marzipan shops, and sunset views over the river. Come for the skyline, but stay for the feeling that Toledo is history speaking in three languages at once.
