Izmir is Turkey’s easygoing Aegean soul — a port city wrapped around a deep blue bay, open to the sea and lived in since the Bronze Age. Legend ties it to Homer, but its real poetry is everyday: Kemeraltı’s old bazaar lanes, warm boyoz from a bakery, midye dolma by the water, and a slow walk along the Kordon promenade as ferries cross the bay and the Aegean turns gold. If you can, stay on a higher floor and let the city reveal itself from above — the harbor, hills, ferries, and sunset all folding into one wide Aegean view. Izmir does not try too hard to impress you. That is exactly why it does.
