The Golden Gate Bridge photo stops being the thing you think of. What you think of is the fog cresting Twin Peaks at 3 p.m. and Ocean Beach in October.
The Golden Gate Bridge is fine. You drive over it on the way to a hike or to dinner in Sausalito, and yes, it's a beautiful piece of engineering. But after a few years of living in this city, the photo people take of the bridge stops being the thing you think of when you think of San Francisco. What you think of is the way the fog crests Twin Peaks at three in the afternoon, the way Ocean Beach is empty in October when the rest of the country is going inside, the way the Mission still smells like Salvadoran bakeries on weekend mornings.
